I am not overly sure whether this topic has been covered before, but I haven't noticed it recently, so I'll have a crack at it.

Now, I know everybody loves multiplayer games, I know I do. There was nothing more thrilling than being a Goldeneye champion back in Sixth Form at school. It was just tremendous.
And internet gaming is even better, as I am sure a lot of you will agree. I loved playing Unreal Tournement online.

But what does the future hold for multiplayer games. Can multiplayer get even better. I am not sure. At the moment, there is two choices where multiplayer is available:

1) Pc - Most of the multiplayer is played online, and is generally a blast. There is also network play. And I have also noticed games where more than one player can play using one keyboard e.g Serious Sam, I haven't tried it yet so I can't comment on what it is like.

2) Consoles - Most of the multiplayer is played with the aid of two to four ports on a console or via multitap, two to four controllers and some friends. Internet gaming is available to DC owners and will soon be available for PS2 and Xbox and Gamecube (I am not sure about when internet will be available for these three consoles exactly).

Multiplayer at the moment is brilliant, but can it get better in the future.
You may get new consoles that can enable more ports on the console (although this is doubtful as the console would be massive). Internet gaming could expand to allow more players to play online. But is this it. Can anything else be accomplished for multiplayer? At this very moment, I can't think of anything new that can be accompished, but I am pretty sure that there are some people out there who can.

What does the future hold for multiplayer?

Yes, but that's not to say it can't improve - broadband at lower prices, faster connections still (highest adsl is currently 2mbit, I think, above this are leased lines, T3 and suchlike, which aren't suitable for home use), and then the extra bandwidth can be used to additional features in the game - real time voice chat, more players, streaming of new levels as you play, and so on.

This could also encourage more people to start playing (permenant high-speed access), which would mean that multiplayer features would be more important in a game, rather than just thrown in as an afterthought, and these new players could also start making their own mods and levels/skins, making the variety of options available to the online gamer even wider.

Side note: Does anyone have the GoldenEye mod for Half-Life? It's just got a few of the levels, skins, and all the weapons from the 64 version, but running at hi-res. It also means that you can play against bots in deathmatch mode or your friends over the internet - www.goldeneye-mod.net if you're interested.

The “multiplayer” option for me is just so important for me to enjoy games. To be honest, I think it was the option to play games with your mates that first got me really into games. Obviously I have been playing games all my life, but when the first FIFA game came out for the Mega Drive I can remember spending some quality hours kicking the football around my mates team and then scoring, watching him throwing the controller across the room.

I really do think that the gaming world wouldn’t have been this loved by people if there was no multiplayer option. Anyway, we have it and we should all be very pleased that we do, I know I am!

As with your example Gohan, Goldeneye was one of the games that put the word “multi” in “multiplayer”. How did I work that out you may I ask, I have no clue! :)

Sadly (maybe it isn’t sadly) we are moving on from gathering all your mates around the television because we have been introduced to a little something that goes by the name of online gaming, first on the PC’s now spreading onto consoles. Is that a bad thing? Well, it can’t do the gaming world any harm, that’s for sure. The only thing that puts me off with online gaming is a little something called lagging. Yes, lagging. Ring any bells? If it does you will know how annoying it is when you are having a one on one battle in UT and then your comp lags so your opponent kills you.

It’s not all bad though with online gaming as we are starting to see some really good games coming out that are specially made with online gaming involved, games like PSO really puts online gaming into it’s own.

As for the future, I think that multiplayer will always be remembered by gamers, and hopefully continued in games, because I think that having all your mates around one screen is far better than playing a total stranger who you can not even reach to thump when they score a goal in the 89’th minuet.

As long as we continue to get hit games such as Goldeneye, companies will continue to add mulitplayer as an option. Also, with the best (arguably) console coming out (the GAMECUBE) having four controller ports built into it, I am sure that this is meant to tell us something? Can’t work it out? Let me explain to you slow people out there :) When Nintendo make a console with 4 control ports you know they did this for a reason. With the amount of quality mulitiplayer games for the N64 (which also had 4 control ports) I am sure that the GAMECUBE will also have quality mulitiplayers out there! Perfect Dark2 anyone?

I agree with you on this point, I think that with Perfect Dark we are witnessing the end of the split screen era, the Net is most certainly the way to go. As far as new multiplayer genres, what about a cross between the first person shooter and the RPG? Playing within a game enviroment, either online or networked with improving character abilities wih time/experience, that would be pretty cool. Think of the possible genres within that format as well, it could be almost anything.

That's a bit strange, Bonus. Was it your use of slang when referring to the Americans. I noticed you changed it in the second version of your post.
