Now, I know everybody loves multiplayer games, I know I do. There was nothing more thrilling than being a Goldeneye champion back in Sixth Form at school. It was just tremendous.
And internet gaming is even better, as I am sure a lot of you will agree. I loved playing Unreal Tournement online.
But what does the future hold for multiplayer games. Can multiplayer get even better. I am not sure. At the moment, there is two choices where multiplayer is available:
1) Pc - Most of the multiplayer is played online, and is generally a blast. There is also network play. And I have also noticed games where more than one player can play using one keyboard e.g Serious Sam, I haven't tried it yet so I can't comment on what it is like.
2) Consoles - Most of the multiplayer is played with the aid of two to four ports on a console or via multitap, two to four controllers and some friends. Internet gaming is available to DC owners and will soon be available for PS2 and Xbox and Gamecube (I am not sure about when internet will be available for these three consoles exactly).
Multiplayer at the moment is brilliant, but can it get better in the future.
You may get new consoles that can enable more ports on the console (although this is doubtful as the console would be massive). Internet gaming could expand to allow more players to play online. But is this it. Can anything else be accomplished for multiplayer? At this very moment, I can't think of anything new that can be accompished, but I am pretty sure that there are some people out there who can.
What does the future hold for multiplayer?
I suppose this would improve with voice communication - Counter-Strike and many other games have it to a degree; pre-recorded phrases that you can say, but you don't usually have time to stop and type. Software like Roger Wilko is low-bandwidth, but consequently also low-quality, once we can get good quality real-time voice comms, then I think co-operative multiplayer will come in to it's own.
This could probably go in Meka's topic too, really..
If you and your friends are on the same team then its an advantage to be able to check on each other's position.
If not, with 96 other players around then what's the use of just checking the 3 of them?
I think that Split Screen and Online gaming can co exist and compliment each other.
Has anyone played Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on the PC. On that you can play split screen online. I.E. Me and my brothers worked together to fight against teams of anonamous freaks.
Ok, so it was a little slow but that was 4 years ago on my underpowered P120 with 16MB of RAM and a 36.6KB modem.
I'm sure the likes of the PS2, the Xbox and Gamecube will be able to handle things a little bit better.
So when I team up with friends we'll be able to work together and look at each others screens to help team work.
It's like having a 4 player deathmatch on Perfect Dark with simulants only without the slowdown and human players instead of characterless elite killing machines.
We'll have tactical skillful battles rather than hiding in a tower waiting for an accurate deadly but dim simulant run continually into your sights as it hunts you down.

Nope! Is there a cheat to get it!
