I'd say fail, but I don't know for sure.

It depends on what emphasis you place on the word succeed.
If you try to fail and succeed in failing, you've achieved your objective.
If you try to fail and succeed instead of failing, you've failed to fail so I suppose you failed.
If you try to fail and succeed in failing, you've achieved your objective.

it's one of those catch 22 situations. If you set out to fail and you fail, you succeed. If you aim to fail and you succeed, you've failed. But can you succeed in failing if you aim to fail.
It's actually not possible to do that.
