The sky appears blue because as white light from the sun enters the atomsphere the blue part is refracted down to the earth. In the evenings when the sun is low in the sky the light from the sun travels through more atmosphere, so most of the blue part is refracted which is why the sky then appears to be red or purple.
Something like that, anyways.
