As many of you will know, "Caviar and cigarettes, well versed in etequette" is a line from the Queen song, Killer Queen. Many of you will also be able to name some of the band's members... there was Freddie Mercury, Brian May and the rest. But how many non-hardcore gamers know who the man behind Sonic or Mario is?

I'm sure people could say that Nintendo made Mario, but if asked "So which person made him", many would guess at "Mr. Nintendo?". On the otherhand, if you asked someone, "Who is the Terminator", or "Who directed ET" they would give the answers "Swartzeneger" and "Speilberg".

If games are truely to become as big as films, do you think that we will see E3 on TV like the Canne Film Festival? Will the Edge games awards be as celebrated as the Oscars? And, coming back to my original point, will Shigsy be as well known as Speilburg?

What are your opinions?

It will take a long time to get the same sort of public recognition as the film industry, but a major first step towards this goal would be to get them more accepted generally. While there is a mix of games for different audiences, with varying content in each one, the same is true of films. However, parents (usually...) seem to think that games warp their childrens' minds, encouraging them to go and replicate what they see in a real-life scenario (This is going to turn in to a censorship debate...).

Unfortunately, the major argument against games always seems to be interaction - in a film you are just the bystander, you see the events happening, but have no control over them. In a game, you are encouraged to take a gun and kill people, or keep trying to get a 100% head shot ratio, or even try to make 3 similarly coloured bubbles explode. The problem is, the more in to the future we go, the more realistic these games are becoming, and so the graphic depection puts even more people off.

The other major problem I could see is cost - a console could be £300 or so (and usually is now), games at £40ish each, along with all the extra peripherals you "need" to get the most out of your games. All told, that's hundreds of times more than your average cinema ticket. The same is true of music - the price of cd players is always falling (while new technologies are more expensive), and CDs are generally much less than games. That, or you just download mp3s and oggs...
