Bit more realistic, I should think. I haven't that much of Essien but claims that he's as good as Gerrard seemed to me a bit hysterical.
Where would you fit him in? People on the BBC's 606 message board seem to think of him as a replacement for Makelele, or another wide option, or backup for Lampard.
This confuses me. I immediately saw him as a replacement for Gudjonsen as a more natural central midfield partner for Lampard, with Makelele keeping his place behind them in that holding role. Few seem to think it's as clear cut as this.
So given that Chelsea have one of their toughest fixtures ahead of them against Arsenal this Sunday, they'll want their strongest side. Anyone care to speculate on what that might be?
Though I'm still on the fence about Glazer.
But about Essien... i've never actually seen him play a full match, and I don't know whether to believe the hype or not. If he makes it in the Premiership, chelsea have the strongest midfield in the game. If he doesn't, they sell him on and buy someone else.
I for one hope Essien fails miseribly in England because of the way he conducted himself at Lyon.
I predict that Lampard, Makelele and Terry won't miss a Prem game this season, barring injury. Bold claim, that :)
Henry's only scored 1 goal so far as well - he should be dropped. And Gerrard, sell him.
I thought Essien would slot straight into the 4-3-3 system pretty easily, taking over the Tiago/Gudjohnsen floater spot.
Cech
Ferreira-Carvalho-Terry-Del Horno
Essien-Makelele-Lampard
SWP/Joe Cole-Crespo-Robben
I reckon that'd be the strongest team possible.
What he'll hopefully do is free up Lampard and allow him to come forward a bit more. Gudjonsen, being a natural striker, has had something of an adverse affect, causing Lampard to concentrate more on his defensive duties.

Hmm, versatile then?
