"Ever since the release candidate for Half-Life 2 was submitted to VU Games in mid-September, a piñata has hung in the lobby of Valve's headquarters. The plan: to bust the sucker open when the game achieved gold status. Earlier today, GameSpot learned from an informed sourced that "the piñata has been broken" and the game has gone gold. Further evidence of the game's completion was a press release issued this afternoon touting the first review of "the entire game." Though nothing official has been announced yet, it appears the fat lady is at last clearing her throat."
Interesting.
Happened with Doom 3, to the extent Jogn McCormack acknowledged the poor thinking in staggering the release.
I'd say that an awful lot of people that were waiting for Doom 3 and are waiting for Half-Life 2 are serious gamers, outweighing the casual gamer who'll buy something on impulse.
Serious gamers who are also on Broadband and download movies/MP3s/Warez versions, because let's face it - hardcore gaming is intrinsically linked to geeks (and I use that word in the positive connotation)
So you're a geek waiting for Half-Life 2. It's released, available for download over whatvernetwork a couple weeks before the shops have it here.
You're going to wait? You've waited for 5 years for this, no way another 14 days is gonna cut it.
So you download, Valve lose your £ but hey, you've got the game so who cares.
Happened with Doom 3 and it'll happen with Half-Life 2.
It's why Toadneck Lucas releases his Star Wars abortions worldwide sameday now - otherwise people download it and realise it, in fact, sniffs balls.

Creative Assembly tried to release Rome: Total War on the same day around the world, but failed.
It was released a couple ofdays early in America while Europe had to wait, and the game was developed by a British developer. The problem seems to be with some rating system the European Union uses, it tied the game up a couple of days, hence the early release in America.

That's almost certainly a mistake.

Yep, best news I've heard all week, and isn't the official release date the 16th November, as was mentioned in the official statement? For America it is anyway, and those who bought on Steam I would assume (including me). Time to book that holiday off.
Do whatever you have to do. Even steal it if you have to.

I'll already be off work due yo Halo 2 being released 5 days before :D
Then there's the USA DS Launch...
I'm going to need a loan just to fuel my gaming needs :(

I believe it is official now - plenty of sites are reporting it. And the release date appears to be 26/11/2004.
