It said 'Undisclosed' on the site I checked. I doubt he would have been free as he was still under contract.

I think what happened with DZ was that he was a wee bit narked at the signing of some new defenders and so asked the manager if he was guarenteed a place. He was told he wasn't and that he'd actually be doing his fair share of bench-warming. He said no thanks, I'm old and need to play regularly and Wigan snapped him up (on a free I think...).

From what I gather, De Zeeuw had a 'falling out' with the Pompey manager and Wigan picked him up on the 11th August for an undisclosed fee.

I think Chelsea's problem was that they expected Wigan to defend deep against them, inviting the forward three onto them and trying to hit back on the counter-attack. They most likely expected to win a lot of free-kicks in the final third, a lot of corners and a lot of deep throw-ins and I expect that the organisation of these was a key feature of practice.

To an extent, Wigan did as expected, but I don't think Chelsea anticipated the quality and organisation their opponents had at the back. Wigan's back four gave away very few set pieces and it was a very rare occurance when their defenders felt the need to go to ground to win the ball.

Being the first game of the season, I feel it must have been a little tricky to change their mindset mid-game and so, as we saw, despite their quality, they certainly looked a little frail up-front.

Personally, I think that Shaun Wright-Phillips is the best option on the right out of all of their wingers, and that Joe Cole should start alongside Lampard instead of Gudjonsen, leaving Duff and Robben to fight over the left-wing position.

No but if you're content with 1-0 wins I can tell you don't go to see the games.

Then again 1-0 wins can be thrilling at times.

If you read my post you'd see i was speaking from the team's perspective and for them it isn't about entertainment it's about getting results and if you gave virtually any manager the choice between an exciting 5-4 loss or a dull and boring 1-0 win they'd pick the win every time.

You may also notice i said it would be frustrating for the fans.

Although i did find the game entertaining today, Wigan came to attack and so made the game watchable, that strategy backfired spectacularly at the end but it was still a good game just not a good performance from Chelsea

No it really doesn't. They can play as poor as that all season but if they've got the win at the end of each game i'm sure they won't care. You think they'd be bothered if they were constantly picking up 1-0 wins all through the season? It'd be frustrating for the fans but at the end those 3 points are still there and that's all that matters

Although that sort of heart stopping finish each game might mean a few less chav Chelsea fans so i'm all for it :-D
