During a very fun meeting had today at SR Towers, the current sudoku 'craze' was discussed. It was work-related, honest.

Strangely, both smv and myself were entirely ignorant as to this phenomenon. We'd absolutely never heard of it, despite being informed that it's absolutely everywhere right now.

Personally, the idea of doing maths puzzles is as appealing to me as gouging out my own eyes, so even if I was aware of it I would have just ignored it, but are smv and I the only ones in the world never to have heard of sudoku?

I saw an advert about a month ago for a programme on Sky One. It featured Carol Vordeman and Sudoku, playing for money etc.

Looks dull and boring.

It's numbers therefore it's maths therefore it's rubbish.

Depends what the symbol for 'hoe' is. :)

It became popular in Japan because crosswords etc don't work that well over there.

8 across: Cooking device (1 symbol)
8 down: Bird (1 symbol)
9 down: Garden Shed Tool (1 symbol)

Sudoku refers to a number placement puzzle also known as Number Place in America. The name is Japanese reflecting the popularity of the puzzle in Japanese puzzle magazines. The puzzle seems to have first been published in the USA before being noticed and then popularised in Japan. It has been an instant success in the London newspaper, The Times.
