To become a regular you have to make 300 posts, containing at least 7500 words in total.

Is this word number too low?

It hardly encourages insightful debate, does it, it's only 25 words per post!

Maybe fewer posts and more words would encourage some newbies not to flood the forums with two line answers, but actually add to discussion with their own views.

Good suggestion Meka, but there is one thing that needs to be dismantled before this can happen:

"Reply Quoting Message".

The amount of times I`ve written a long message, only to come back later to find the whole thing quoted with a one liner at the bottom.

Many of us use it properly, by either selecting only the relevant parts, or by responding to each bit in turn.

By putting the word count up, "Reply" will never get used, and "RQM" will get worn out.

I think if a newbie wants to be a regular he can do it in 2 days anyway.

I don't think there is any need for a system anyway; all you get is rude and abusive regulars, and rude and abusive newbies. If there's going to be a system, and it works, why change it? And, yes, who cares?

I disagree. No-one would chat anymore, because it would bring their count down. Then they'd end up posting 40 "a"s so they keep the word-count up.

Let's face it, the system is open to abuse, but:

a) What system isn't?

b) Who really, really cares?

My average is about 32 i think, so i would lose my regular status. maybe they should just give regular status after u have been here for a ceratin time period and posted a certain amount of words. Eg making it impossible to become a regular in a couple of days.

After reading all the arguments, I think that the limits should be left the way they are. The majority of newbies want regular status and go about trying to achieve this without trying to hiss off too many people in the process. I think that if the limits were changed,
ie more posts required - you'd see alot more shorter posts and probably meaningless posts;
If the amount of words were increased - again you would see alot more meaningless posts, not to mention the fact that newbies might duplicate any of their large posts as well.

An interesting idea that users must have an average word count of 40 sounds okay, then again you may have newbies just adding words to the end of their posts to maintain/increase their average. Another thing is, would regulars lose their "title" if their average went below 40??
