What game do you think has the best level design on a PS1/PS2?

Mine would have to be Prince of Persia out of all of the games i've played. I think it's basically because i'm really interested in Egypt and I love the Pyramids and stuff. It's also because there was so much to do on each level, you could do loads of different things like swing and ropes, crawl under cracks, walk along walls, hang off bars etc etc. There was alot to do, and although the fighting moves were a bit repetitive the level designs still kept me interested and made me want to progress to the next level.

If you count unlocking new bits of a map as unlocking new levels then it has to be the GTA series.

Indeed, probably the most linear jungle in history

The older games up as far as 5 were understandably less impressive, but still excellent for their time. However, 7, 8, 9 and 10 have all had superb cities, villages and landscapes that are quite often jaw-dropping. I'd particularly recommend 8 simply because of the variety. It was very different to 7 and 9 in that it wasn't afraid to get a little bit sci-fi. Levels in space and travelling through futuristic cities was possible in some areas of the game, whilst there were still plenty of small villages and more traditional final fantasy settings earlier in the game.

Yeh, FF had some great level designs. But I only ever played FF10 and FF7 so I dunno whether it was just them two or whether the whole FF series had great level designs.

In terms of actual level structure, I'd go with Prince of Persia as well and maybe add Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter to that list. However, looking at level design from a more artistic point of view, Final Fantasy games have got to be right up there.

I found the level design in Metal Gear Soild 3 to be quite interesting.

The whole jungle idea was executed very well and the claustrophobic element that naturally comes with a thick jungle was always alleviated just at the right time.

I quite took a shine to Vagrant Story's level design.
