Whatever, it's a really, really good film, and I encourage all y'all to rent it.
EDIT: I'll have to watch it again before it goes back, I kept noticing little hints here and there to suggest it's all set-up to push him in certain directions.

Basically, they keep him in a room for 15 years while they set things up, and once things are set up and ready to go, the release him and it all starts. :-)

Er...yeah, that's what happens. I was on about the possibility that it was all part of the hypnosis session. I've accepted now that they put him in the suitcase and let him out on the roof, and it wasn't symbolic of anything, or part of the hypnosis.

Should have bit his tongue, etc.
It seemed to make sense to me.
Basically, some guy got incestuous with his sister and Dae-Su caught them and spread it around. This lead to rumours leading to this sister thinking that she was pregnant which ended up in her brother killing her.
This left him messed up and vengeful for the rest of his life.
He blamed Dae-Su and wanted revenge.
It so happens that he ends up rich and powerful enough to do so.
So he kidnaps Dae-Su and keeps him in that room for 15 years during which time he kills the with and adopts the infant child.
Then he hypnotises them both so they both fall in love without realising they've been set up. Now she is old enough and they are both hypnotised, the "game" is set so he is set free onto the roof to start, and so the relationship starts while Dae-Su is trying to find out what's going on.
Then this guy eventually breaks it to him that he's been screwing his own daughter as revenge for the whole sister thing, showing him what it's like...
He threatens to reveal this to Dae-Su's daughter who then starts pathetically begging him not to and even cuts out his gossiping tongue. He then realises that his revenge is complete and shoots himself.
Dae-Su is then last seen begging the hypnotist to erase his memory of knowing that it was his daughter so he can go back to laying with her in blissful ignorance. There were other controls and set-ups but I think they were mainly designed to lead Dae-Su to the guy as planned...
That's what I made from it anyway.
Poor Dae-Su... one careless bit of gossip and... :-)

Because they're messing with his brain. Why would he try to escape the cell if he thinks he's done something like that?
