His new 'un doesn't sound bad actually, The Good Shepherd starring himself, Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. It's about the 40 year history of the CIA, and he's directing it himself. Here's hoping.
It really makes no difference what he does anymore. I mean just look at the films he's got under his belt.

That's just a fraction of the absolutely fantastic career he's had. It's not like he could keep playing the same character he played in a lot of his films either. All actors will try to re-invent themselves at some point.
I'd like to think that Scorcese will come his way again to make another epic. Afterall, De Niro's finest films were a product of the De Niro-Scorcese relationship.
Personally I'd like to see him in a role similar to how he played his characters in "Heat" and "Ronin".
