$400 and it will cost them $494 to make each console. :S

Ordinarily, I'd agree. But it's not just a games console.
Anyway, I'd say it's inevitable. As technology improves, they aren't always going to be able to put new cutting-edge machines out at a fixed £300 price point.
However, they may well surprise everybody. Everything is just hearsay and rumour at the moment, and a hell of a lot can happen between now and release. After all, the PSP is a lot cheaper than everyone expected, and cheaper than it should be given the technology and capabilities.
Sony have also said that they expect the price of the PS3 to be fixed for quite some time, but I suspect that will all depend on how things go with the 360.
However we do have a good year to save up before it hits the uk, i reckon next chrimbo for us if we're lucky. Either way i'm saving up as we speak :)
I'll buy an Xbox 360 and am expecting some games to be great. But it's not all that exciting.
Meaning my parents will put about £250 towards me getting one while i'll find another £150 ish to get games and stuff.
And at the moment I have no home console and it's really starting to bother me and there is no way I am waiting until Spring (probably not even Spring for the Europeans) to get one.
I just realised, we only have about 2 and a half months until the first Next Gen console is released.
How exciting is that?

£399.99? looks like i'll be waiting a long time to get a PS3, it pains me to say it but I might just have to settle for the 360 or keep my PS2 going for a few more years.
To be honest, I don't think i'll be the only one either, £400-£450 is way too much for a games console.

Not necessarily. A lot of people think along the lines of "if it's more expensive, it must be better".
Aside from the fact that it probably will be better (marginally at least - it definitely has an edge in power, even though it may not be as much as Sony claim), remember that the PS2 continued to outsell the Xbox even after Microsoft dropped the price by £100 just a month after launch, and the PS2 was the more expensive machine.
Anyway, there have been murmerings that PS3 will be more expensive than usual, so I'm expecting - and planning for - £399 to be honest.
Plus, anyone "waiting for PS4" will have a hell of a long wait. I was reading recently that Sony apparently envisage the life of PS3 to be in the range of 10 years! At the rate this kind of technology moves, I can't see that myself... but who knows?! I mean, the PS1 has pretty much managed it.
