My solution to this was a 17kg steel case. I can't exactly hide it, but the total PC weighs 25kg making it difficult to run off with at least!

"# Intel® Celeron® M Processor 350 (1.30 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400 MHz FSB)

I weep. Don't do it.

Dell Inspiron 1200 for £399 - just change the service to 90 days.

Yeah if space is an issue desktops can be pretty chunky, although if you get a nice thin screen, stick your tower on the floor and put it all on a desk it won't take up much more room than a laptop, although I understand your point, especially if you won't actually have room for a desk.

I'll be getting a laptop for Uni for 3 main reasons (despite phi11ip constantly trying to convince me that I don't need one):
a) I'll be living in a SMALL room with not much space (like yourself)
b) I will be moving back and forth between places fairly regularly and also I may take a year out somewhere
c) A laptop is easier to hide and less likely to get stolen if my room is burgled (obviously only if I hide it, though)

Portability is an issue (but is it a word?), but admittedly it isn't necessary.

The problem is space, to be honest. I'd be hard pushed to get it into the house I'm in now, and due to my parents splitting up fairly recently, the house I will soon be moving to will be about 40% smaller.

If you're getting a laptop because you think it'll be cooler then get a desktop. If you're just going to use it in your house you can build a very good computer for about £500 if you know what to get.

Build yourself a desktop. My laptop is a £450 system I use for programming to anyone else it would be a pile of ass.

Does it have to be a laptop?

Portability aside, you can get a lot more for your money buying (or building) a desktop.
