This barn, after a bit of idiocy from my close friend neal. Got burnt to the ground. In brief, my friend was working in a barn. Stacking a selection of broken chip and pin machines. It was a cold day in January and so he decided to start a fire to keep warm. Using my lighter my friend recklessly started a fire on a stack of boxes and then later, upon request, in a bin, away from danger. As the situation wore on my friend moved the bin nearer to him, which I questioned, the fire flicked from the metal bin and hit a stack of boxes. To cut a long story short, the barn burnt to the ground.
1 month later he is arrested, he tells his arresting officer that it was I that started the fire. So I was arrested. I told the truth, as stated above. 4 months down the line we are both charged with Arson.
I appear in court next week.
I am, as some will known, a Cambridge university student, with a small desire to be a teacher. This offense could see my dreams dashed and my prospects ruined. I have no idea what the minimum sentence is (be it imprisonment or community service), nor do I know EXACTLY what I did wrong.
At the moment my "close friend" still insists it was I that was responsible for the fire.
Help???
The bit that gets me is that you made up a story with your friend just in case the police got involved. I would say "for a Uni student", but that means very little these days, so I'll just say, for anybody, that was a very stupid thing to do. Just damn lucky you didn't use it.
You well and truly screwed up. Both of you. He lit the fire, but did you do anything to try and stop him? Oh wait, no, you actually gave him your lighter to start it with.
Go to court, tell the truth and you'll probably get a rather hefty fine along with some community service.

If your community service is working in a barn, take a coat...
To be a bit more serious for a second, I seriously doubt you'll be going down. It was more along the lines of the "reckless" side of criminal damage, which will go a little more for you in court.
Your mate is the main party at fault, but as far as I'm concerned, you played your part.
Good luck in court.
Seriously though, good luck Dringo.

From an outsider's point of view two people managed to burn down a barn and caused £100,000 worth of damage.
Worst case scenario is you'll be banged up for arson and perverting the cause of justice. There's also the small matter of the insurers, they're going to want their £100,000 back once they've paid up.
Best case scenario is your mate will get banged up for arson and perverting the cause of justice. You'll just get banged up for complicity/negligence when they realise there's no way a student can afford to pay back the legal costs of the prosecution.
Either way I don't think future employers are going to accept your PGCE with a criminal background.
So my helpful advice would be start thinking about an alternative career. Look on the bright side, you get to learn lots of useful skills inside these days. Rooftop protests could enable progression into a successful career as a tiler, your experience with tattooing (whether you want one or not) could progress into a self-employment a decade later as you set up your own business as a professional skin-artist (assuming the HIV doesn't get you first) and of course you'll be highly skilled in the use of a needle and thread and will be able to darn your own socks ever after.
You'll also get to expand your intellectual horizons further than you could ever do at Cambridge (smack cut with brick dust is quite an eye-opener).
