After seeing Star Wars III, I decided to set out to research current technology and the possibility of construvting a real, working lightsaber!

I dont expect to complete it in the next few yearsm but its a fun project nonetheless.

Anyone know of any good websites, any current technology, or any ideas of your own about how this amazxingly cool thing could be acheived?

Don't you all know that lightsabers are merely glow sticks? They aren't hot! The only reason people get killed with them is that the user has a gun in their pocket.

u don't think stephen hawking has anything better to do?

"hmm...what shud I do today? Dicover a few new secrets of the way the universe works and come that much closer to discovering its purpose? ...naaaahh, I'll build a lightsaber".

I found some articles about lasers and plasma in l;ightsaber technology, but guess what? Lasers are a good choice but the right sized power source would not exasctly be easy 2 fit into the handle of ur lightsaber. And plasma, although a power source is easier, it extends to only about 6 inches, needs 50 litres of air pumped thru per minute, and reaches temps of upto 10,000 degrees celsius, so might buirbn the robe cuffs a bit.

Yeah, I'm sure you'll be the first.

There's a few sites if you want to try your hand.
Although from what I've seen, you can either have one which is always extended which looks pretty damn good, or one that actually extends in and out, but the light and blade look utterly rubbish.

So, meh.

And for some reason, they don't cut anything.
Shocking.

Why not get some glass tubes, fill them with petrol and light them, that should work to some extent.
