1024mb Ram

And it jerks while playing a song, or when moving my mouse across the screen.
Any ideas?
I've
- run a virus scan
- run an ad scan
- defragmented it
It's pretty screwed anyway.
Good idea

look there for one of the registry programs, called registry mechanic. i use it and it is all working fine. in the start menu, go to run, then type in msconfig go to the far right tab, and uncheck all the items you don't want to start up when your pc starts up, depending on what things you have running, some things are needed and some things aren't. a clue is often in where it is on the c:\. have you done disk clean up and all that faf? do i have any other thoughts... probably but none at hand. just try the things i have mentioned and hope it gets better. it does really sound like a spyware problem, but on the things you have been saying it is probably not. hope that helps.
In general System Idle Process has the highest CPU usage, at 99 mostly. Even moving the mouse about keeps this value. Every now and then a few processes will take a little of the CPU, for a second or so, including explorer.exe, TeaTimer.exe and gcasDtServe.exe.
That peak at 97% must have been a one off, but looking at the performance tab and moving the mouse around still reached as high as 67%, although the processes tab didn’t show any major shift from idle time.
Loading up Internet Explorer took over with around 75 max, but quick settled. I’m not sure if that is relevant or not.
Yet, XP in general can be really slow. For example, in another thread Bullett asked about the ordering of his / her (sorry) My Computer. Attempting to use the menu to select view took about 8 seconds to gain a response. The same thing happens when trying to sort other folders and file, where-by the menu will freeze, disappear and lock for a few seconds, before letting me complete the simple task. IE is the same with the ‘view’ menu, freezing for a moment before letting me do anything.
It just seems like a really odd thing to happen. The rest of the menu options generally are usable instantly, al bar the View menu.

The error message is something to do with MSN Messenger, a quick google hints that it could be that two instances of MSN Messenger are trying to run together. There are so many entries on Google I'd wager it's harmless, certainly not responsible for the slowdown you get.
Open up Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and sort by CPU descending (so the programs that are using the most CPU are at the top of the list). When you waggle your mouse cursor around on the screen, what program(s) have high CPU usage?

I have a few of them. No detrimental effect on my system tho...
I've been reading through your comments, and tried each in turn, and found that:
--> My CPU usage peaked at 97% just by moving the mouse around (that can't be good, can it?).
--> Under event viewer and system, I've got a lot of erros and warnings, two today in fact, with a DCOM source with the comment "The server {F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."
I do find that my system can be incredibly slow and unresponsive, quite often in fact, so judging from the two points above, do you think I should take the time to do a format?
