The reason he's trying to make money back is so his family doesn't have to put up with the kind of debt he's suffered. He's only rich in assets - not like Abramovich, who's just plain rich.
If he sold all his shares in all the companies he owns, he'd have a crapload of money. But he wants more from each of them, so he's not going to do that.

Apparently the sweetner for this takeover is £20 mill transfer money, but this will probably a part of the £300 mill debt he will bring to the club :/
