With the arrival of Resi 4, I started thinking: Hmm. What is more scary, flms or games?

Personally, I think games.

Name another? I'm not saying there are no directors capable of achieving a scary film, but when compared to another genre the fans seem to have to settle for cheese.

Games can give you a very uneasy feeling, be it years ago with Doom when you were in a dark room with only one way out and just three bullets left while you could hear the moans of the demon stalking you, or more recently the ghost town in Half Life 2 where there's always another head crab mutant zombie ready to jump out at you, or climb up a drain pipe to rip your spine out.

Films don't give that.

Both forms of media are far too predictable. Very few top class directors when it comes to horror films in my opinion (someone will no doubt correct me) and it shows with the amount of recycled rubbish that is poured upon the public - who are supposed to be scared obviously. Games suffer from the same thing really, a lot rely on pre scripted events to get the jumps, the few that do succeed tend to be those which get the atmosphere just right. I find when a game does freak me out an hour or two later the feelings gone. Not many horror games which can provide sustained horror from my experiences.

Yep, I'd agree with that. Shalebridge Cradle in Thief 3 is a great example.

I found playing Silent Hill scarier than any horror film I've watched.

But then it might have something to do with the fact that I was about 13 at the time.

Couldn't've put it better myself. Films very rarely scare me personally, but games on the other hand, there's loads that cause me to jump and scream profanities at the top of my lungs.

Apart from when you're moving your character into dark places/water/other.

Films are nothing compared to a scary and tense game.
