Hopefully some of you will be able to settle this dispute.

So, my parents and I are sitting at the table eating dinner, I finish mine and then my mum says that if I want to I can leave the table and wash my plate. I get up to do so but then my dad makes one of those annoying forced coughs.

I say 'What?' and he replies by saying that I have poor table manners. This confused me so I asked why and then he said that I should ask to be excused before leaving. However, I responded by saying that there is no need to ask to be excused if you've already been told you can leave. He says I'm wrong. I ask him to explain why I need to do so and then he simply sighs and says 'Yes, you're right you're always right aren't you?' in an extremely sarcastic tone. I tell him that he's replying like this because he doesn't have a reason and then he just continues being sarcastic, causing me to just leave anyway.

The way I see it, why would anybody be expected to ask to leave the table once they've been already told to do so? It seems ignorant to ask a question that you've just been given the answer to and not only that but I think it makes you come across as a bit retarded. So who's right, me, my parents, or does nobody know? And if I'm wrong, then surely that rule should be changed, it makes no sense.

Aww..Such a good boy you are to finish all your din-din and so willingly wash your plate. *clutches heart* I'm so proud of you JFH. Sounds like your Dad was just simply pointing out that you ask to be excused, just for the sake of saying it..not that you hadn't? Maybe? Sounded a bit tense anyways.

Don't sweat the small stuff..just let it roll off.. :)

I'm trying to find some sort of official table manners website or something to prove that I'm right. I managed to start another arguement over Christmas dinner when one of the questions in the crackers was 'which human organ is the largest?' The answer on the sheet was the liver but I claimed it was the skin. This actually became quite a heated arguement of me vs. rest of family. Good old BUPA website proved me right. Unfortunately, they don't have a table manners section.

Unlucky, I never had to do the whole 'may I be excused ?' table manner malarcky.

Good table etiquette involves letting loose a plump and juicy plop on the empty plate of the person sitting to your left

There was nothing wrong ith your actions, don't worry.

I live in a very relaxed environment, we don't have such petty rules. Why, just today, me and my dad had a row that involved me threatening to smack him in the face and telling him where he can go. A minute later, all was well.

Regarding table manners, in my old secondary school, there was a poster with Garfield on it saying "Use good table manners"... He had his elbows on the table.
