my dad is getting me a DS for christmas (he works in NY) but will i be able to by english games for it??? All the other gameboys worked with overseas games but will this? and is there anything else i will need?

The whole reason why you can't use batteries is that Nintendo are phasing them out for rechargable Lithium-Ion batteries (the kind that are used in Laptops), that way you don't have to spends loads of money each year on spare batteries for your console. Nintendo unlike Sony aren't money hungry lunatics that want to make a profit out of every little thing.

No. You cannot use batteries.

Goddamnit would everyone be so worried about getting Stepdowns in time if all you had to do was slot in a couple of AAs?

It's a transformer (not a robot in disguise, no), which lowers the voltage which a socket supplies, as Americans only have 150 Volts (or something) whereas we use 230-240, so, you need a stepdown converter to stop the voltage from blowing up your charger/DS
