The other day, my brother, who is 4 years old, said to my mum that he thought his skin was peach. To say the least she wasn't impressed. She is a firm believer that we have white skin. To be honest though, I would describe my skin as peach and if I had to do a picture for art I would use the peach, not the white. The problem my mum seems to have is that she feels he has been told that his skin is not white. This is quite possible but I think there's a fair chance that his teacher could have been quite innocently advising him on what his skin colour technically is, not trying to back away from the white/black divide.

I'm not somebody that sticks up for the effects of political correctness but on this particular occasion I'm not sure that it is being PC that is to blame. I think we are reaching a stage where to some people, blaming political correctness is the answer to everything. If a black or asian person appears on TV I hear cries of 'This is all down to being politically correct, blah blah blah' half the time.

In some cases I would agree, like the example of Postman Pat I used previously, but there are plenty of innocent cases. There are a good number of black and asian people in this country so of course they are going to appear on TV on a fairly regular basis.

One new example of political correctness gone mad that I have recently come across are the books my brothers bring home to read from school. There are set scheme of books to read, I'm sure you had the same sort of thing, when I was in infant school it was Rosie and Sam. Anyway, recent storylines have involved a boy in a whellchair getting a new jumper, Georgina and the Dragon bigging it up for the feminists, and I would say that the main characters in 70% of the books are asian, not black, not white (or peach), asian. Though, to be completely fair, I would say that 70% of that school is asian. However, the books are made for the entire country so I'm fairly sure that is not a fair representation for other schools. I'm not saying that none of the books should feature asian characters, but 70% seems a bit excessive.

I'm bored now, so I think I'll stop typing.

It does work both ways - people can use PCness as an excuse.

My mum is being a nutjob because of her obsession with political correctness.

I like to think of myself as being rubber-duck yellow.

"B*tch, I KNOW you didn't just call me white".. [hm.. what's that from?]

I'd say we're dirty-whites. Stained and all.
