I didnt see the point in having ken and ryu in the game, they were exactly the same.

Right, she lived in a monestry until she was 10. At that time some farmers came and tryed to destroy it. There was a massive fight in which Chun Li's dad got killed. From that day she swore to avenge his death.
After the torunament in which Ryu became champion for the first time she travelled the world. Eventually coming to Ryu's hometown. There she trained with Ryu and taught HERSELF in the art of Sheng Long.

Not just now, very impressive knowledge though.
Ryu was the straight version of Ken. I can't write it the other way around, I think.
