Right, well now that I'll be travelling a lot more, I need a loptop. Well; want a laptop. In any case, I'm just wondering quite how much I'm expected to shell out on a decent laptop - preferably, one that can play games.

Now, I've always had my eye on an Apple, only I don't have a clue about their position with games... Even so, how much for your basic Aple laptop? Are powerbooks the way to go?

-- Also, can Mac's "interface with" PCs? As in, say I have a couple of .doc (or would I have to use .txt?) documents, could I transfer them to and fro?

Finally - wireless networking. What's up with that?? Say I'm in Europe, got my wireless card plugged in, and... What? Can I surf broadband style like I can at home? Is it still on the same monthly package - as in do I have to pay extra?

(All I want to do is use my iPod, Photoshop, take pictures and play WoW on the go... Is that too much to ask?)

YOU DO NOT NEED A LAPTOP FOR UNI.

So many people make this mistake, including me. It will stay in your room all the time as there's no real need for you to take it anywhere else. Smaller desktops won't take up much space.

Get a destop, then spend the extra money on going out.

Why do people fail to acknowledge bittorrent?

Limewire isn't the only method.

I mean er, not like I know these sorts of things.

Anyway, I'm keeping an eye on this thread because I'm really debating getting a laptop for Uni in September and a PowerBook would be nice.

Really really nice.

I imagine a desktop wouldn't be very good for travelling around Europe.

I would get a Powerbook as they're great, except that I want to be able to play games, which means I'll not be getting one. Shame :' (.

Also, this student discount business. I'm startin Uni next year. How do I get a discount and how much?

I know this is quite random, but Dell laptops are odd. Everyone could use the touchpad apart from me, it refused to acknowledge that my finger was on it!

I had to place my whole finger on it to move the cursor unlike the touchpad here where I can just use my fingertip with the lightest of contact.

I'm not getting a Dell laptop, or any other laptop again saying that. Although I'm not as anti-laptop as I was when this one was 'broken,' it's actually quite good now...

Laptops are OK, just expensive. If you don't really need one, don't get one. Just get a small desktop.

Im sitting here with the top spec 12" iBook, on wireless internet.

Ive had it a couple of months now, and its great.
Doing things on the go is easier then anything. Because its small, light, and runs great on battery.

As limewire is the only sharing program that mac can use (as far as i know) just about everyone who has a mac has limewire, so mac programs are easy to find on limewire. (not that i would ever download illegal copies of dreamweaver, flash, photoshop, office, etc)

You'd probably be best starting with an iBook, as they are actually a great deal for money.
They're not as light as Powerbooks, but top spec 12inches are practically the same the only thing differant is the graphics card, and the fact the cost doesn't even reach the price of the low spec powerbook.

Much as I admire the Mac hardware (portable and desktop variants), I find the limited software library very off putting, whats the point of all that efficient power if I can't really put it to use??

I ask you

EDIT: *Wonders who "you" refers to...

*shrugs

Yes.

OS X - it's pretty damn fantastic compared to Windows.

You can get student discounts.

LimeWire

Don't know much about graphics cards - sorry.

Go to the official WoW forum for Mac issues, there's a dedicated sticky thread there. You should be able to run it easily on 1280x1024 at ~30FPS, though it drops to 15-20 on large places.

That sucks... (The online bit.)

But then I remembered I'm invariably staying with people more often than I am at hotels. So yes. Good good. But then again, do Apple's use the same ethernet connection as Windows laptops?

Also - other than being rediculously cool and "oh, look at me" what's the advantage of having a Mac laptop? I mean sure, if I was on 50K+ a year, no problem, but Mac software is so expensive. And much harder to "borrow". So I'm thinkning Win Win Win now, and whats a decent mobility graphics card? My home PC has a 9600XT currently, and coupled with 1GB of RAM I can play HL2 etc at 60+ FPS easy. But for WoW, what kind of specs do you need to run it on full / good? Would I be right in thinking RAM is the most important factor, as in general is the case with MMORPGs?

Cheers...
