The real story is that Pearl Harbor was attacked without warning by the Japanese who weren't even provoked. It is classed by many as one of the greatest war crimes of all times.
So is Hollywood being greedy? Exchanging cash for changing history and in the process upsetting and offending many brave people who were part of World War II?
This isn't the first time Hollywood's twisted the truth. In the war films U-571 and Saving Private Ryan the truth was twisted to appeal to it's main audiences. In U-571 the Americans were depicted as heroes yet the people responsible for the thing they supposedly did were the British. Why did they do this? To appeal to their American audience of course. And the people who should be honoured for doing this and helping the world be Nazi free are not and instead being forgotten. Imagine how these people must feel if alive or dead. Don't they deserve any honour? In Saving Private Ryan again Spielberg gave all the glory to Americans rather than the other British and Canadians that were involved.
I just ask film makers will in future give the deserved people their glory if they are writing about a historic event in war. Do the people involved justice and for once stop being greedy. As great as the USA thinks it is it has no right.
If you like action-spectaculars, great, but dont throw your money on this disgusting film.
They held the premier party on an aircraft carrier in a bay that has a warship still at the bottom with it's crew entombed.
Lovely
We have also been indoctrinated to believe that Hitler was bad and Stalin ruled because he helped us during the war. In fact Stalin was as bad as Hitler. He killed about the same amount of people (even more) during his scheme of collectivization and during his purges when he became paranoid. About 20 million people died.
"less ... problems than America, less pollution"
Are you sure, there are nice regions in Britain true although as a percentage of land covered with pollution Ild say the states is less polluted than here. If youve ever walked down any high street in Britain youll notice that fag butts, beer cans, and chewing gum are everywhere. In the states yould be arrested for littering.
However the US could become more polluted if Bush gets his way.
I was tempted to go see it but im not sure.
Goatboy, have you seen High Fidelity?
1)The story - Godawful cheesy romance set against a tragedy in what was pretty much a conflict full of tragedies.
Boy meets girl, boy goes off to war, girl falls for best friend, boy comes back and hates best friend. Japanese attack, boy saves best friend and they learn to overcome their differences.
Hello? Can we be any more cliche please? Do they get these plots out of a tumbler?
2)The director - Micheal Bay. Has previously offered us such cinematic delights as Armageddeon and The Rock.
Mindless action movies with quips and set-pieces.
Suddenly, he wants to be taken seriously as a director instead of a nice visualist?
I dont think so.
3)Titanic - Same movie, different disaster placed in the way of true love. This movie has "If you liked Titanic" splashed all over it. Offensive and purile. Do you know they spent $135 million on this? That isn't right.
Holding the premiere on a warship in Hawaii and no Japanese invited to it.
Tasteless, insensitive, crass, over-hyped etc etc.
Not even in 5 years time in December when this plays on BBC1 will you catch me watching this floater.
It annoys me that movies like this are rammed down out throats, whilst genuine delights like One Night at McCools, Best in Show, Blow and The Dish are ignored because they don't have marketing machines convincing us they might be good.
Pearl Harbour/Summer Blockbuster/Tie-in extravaganza?
One word: Godzilla
I was going to watch Pearly Harbour, but i don't think i can be bothered to sit through all the "Oh, i'll come back to you, i promise. Everyone i know will die, but i'll somehow survive, helped by a load of really favourable coincedences"
The rest of it, I thought, degenerated into cheese.
Typical Spielberg, unable to resist easy manipulation of emotions through stirring music and heartfelt speeches.
And as for Matt Damon "I will not leave these people for I am an American goddamit!" completely invalidated the previous 2hrs.
But that's just my opinion.
> Omaha beach was NOT all americans.
Was it not? Hmmmm, ok im wrong then.
But Saving Private Ryan was merely an "ok" film as far as i'm concerend. I've seen a lot of films that are better.
I do admit, the first half hour or so was well impressive,
And what it didnt show was the complete f**k up by the Americans in planning that.
The UK offered them troop carriers that could get through shallow water and up the beach - the offer was refused.
The Americans were supposed to lay down carpet bombing cover the previous night but misjudged completely and ended up 17miles south of Omaha.
Sorry to be pedantic, but Saving Private Ryan WAS a good film, but factually innacurate on a lot of levels.
