"It's Easter. Fetch the Pope."
"Can't. Someone split him."
"What? For Christ's sake, it's on signs everywhere. DON'T SPILL THE POPE. Ok, stay calm. We'll just cancel Easter."

Curiously, this is exactly what was on kevstars application for sickness benefit...

He's a figurehead?

Chances are he got about a day or 2 left why bother removing him? alot of popes are popes right till the end, its the way it's done.

Are you insane, the guys half dead already, he can't speak or walk, infact he can't do anything. Why should he remain?
Huge crowds gather to watch a tired, near-death figurehead attempt to say something meaningful, only to gasp and be wheeled back inside.
It's genius, I hope he hangs in there for another 10yrs getting more and more decrepit and mental until he's just a head in a jar that the deputy popes hold aloft on giant videoscreens for people to applaud.
> Yeah popes don't retire they are pope till they die,
Actually, I've been reading up on Papal history recently and I was shocked to find out that they can basically abdicate the papacy. The way it works is that each pope inherits his authority directly from St Peter (the 1st pope), rather than from the previous pope.
Most of em cling onto it until the bitter end though.
