My brother formatted my PC..now it's got no sound.

How do I find out what sound card I have so that I can download some stuff to make my PC make some noises.

go on start> all programs>accessories>system tools>system information

find the make and name of the card and google it for drivers :D
That might be the problem :|

I'll be showing up as a yellow question mark (unknown) in the PCI devices most probably. Cracking the case and having a look at the card is the way I usually do it if you don't have a driver cd.

Nope, that's your DVD/CD-RW drive. You are looking for something containing the word Audio or Multimedia or something similar.

Do you know if you have a soundcard or if it is onboard sound? Would you be confident to open your PC up and have a look inside to see if you can see it? It's very easy to do, and you can't break anything as long as you don't start prodding anything inside.

Also, make sure you don't open it too quickly. Because if it's like mine, you'll end up pulling cables out of their ports as I recently discovered

You mean you couldn't see it inside the case?

OK, try this, look on the back of the case where your speakers are plugged in.

Can you describe where abouts on the back of the case they are plugged in? Is it near where the keyboard and mouse are plugged in - i.e. in that rectangular section with lots of plugs in?

Or is it lower down in a one of the metal strips going across the back of the PC.
