there's a brilliant line in the book that comes with Strapping Young Lad's "No Sleep 'til Bedtime" album, the end of it reads "... do a better job, b!tch afterwards"

it's worth considering i think. if everyone can see what's so very "wrong" with a genre or a style, then why not have a go yourself?

hehe, yeah, we don't speak about "boulevard..."
still, one total duffer in 10 years+ is a good ratio.

When I saw the latest Greenday video, I thought to myself "oh look, another sub-standard video for another dull song where they walk around a bit and try to look emotional".

i'll agree with that, i never said good charlotte were punk in any way because they're not, they're a clothing label with guitars, but that doesn't mean that ALL recent new wave punk bands are.

me either m'man. Good Charloote were manufactured to hop on a (nicely branded) skateboard, cling to the back of whichever bandwagon went by with the most people on it and skitch their way to popularity. a few strings pulled here and there by label owners and BOOM! they're in a transplants video with f***ing kelly osbnourne, playing cards and comparing ill-applied makeup. bands like that are all image and zero substance, which is in no way punk, which makes it all the more annoying for hard working bands who all cram in the back of a van and play for little money while rubbish like this sits pretty on the cover of smash hits.

p.s - Sibs: good list mate, especially Capdown, Anti-flag and All/Descendants. well worth a listen.

May not have been part of it, but I remember it's dying days and it died because people lost sight of the 'ethos'.

Contradicted yourself there. don't count the likes of Good Charlotte as punk because they go against that ethos in their very music. All they do is whine. Whiney lyrics, whiney guitars. Just because they've put it on a record they think they're punk. Nope, not for me.

Very_Metal is very right (see what I did there...?) in everything he said in that big post a while back.

Saying this band is/isn't punk is fine if you're restricting punk to being a simple musical genre, but that misses the point somewhat.

But anyway, if you're looking for some great bands, check out these:

Sonic Boom Six - http://www.sonicboomsix.co.uk/ - Great ska/punk/reggae/dub/hardcore stuff with female MCing vocals... Has to be heard to be believed...

Rise Against - http://www.riseagainst.com/ - Hardcore influenced melodic punk.

Bad Religion - http://www.badreligion.com/home/ - The masters of melodic punk since the 80's, and still going very strong.

Capdown - http://www.capdown.co.uk/ - The UKs finest Ska'rdcore outfit.

Anti-Flag - http://www.anti-flag.com/ - Political US punkers.

Propagandhi - http://www.propagandhi.com/ - Radical political thrash from Canada.

Adequate Seven - http://www.adequate7.co.uk/ - Amazing funk-punkers who are awesome live.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy - http://www.burningheart.com/bands/index.php?id=209 - Swedish garage-punk.

No Comply - http://www.nocomply.co.uk/index.shtml - metallic punk rock with horns.

All / Descendents - http://www.allcentral.com/ - These two bands are essentially the same (each has a different singer, but share all other band members) and each are very good pop-punk stuff.

Yeah, that's about all I can be bothered with, doubt anyone will really check half these out now despite my obvious effort, but I like to try my best...

Anybody that still thinks this is obviously totally oblivious to what is going on in music. Bands like Blink and Greenday are as mainstream as (c)rap and pop nowadays.
