I may speak with authority, as I am midway through the cambridge latin course and am quite proficient at french. It's latin, ok.

My table leg claims that's latin.

This might have been pointed out, but that's actually Latin. My dog and the bin thinks so too.

But you need to off seen or heard some of it at least, to recognise the features of the language. Though it really doesn't look french.

I don't know Latin, and I could still tell that it was Latin.
You don't actually have to be able to understand a language to be able to recognise it.
