i use a 550w PSU and usually all is fine and dandy, but it randomly became really loud and then refused to work. it works fine on a spare PC i keep to test these little things out on and likewise, the other PSU works fine in my regular machine (which i'm currently running using the PSU from "spare")
any ideas what may cause this? as the PSU i'm using now is only a 300w one and i have a fair amount of stuff that requires power so obviously i'd like to get the 550w one back in a.s.a.p.
any suggestions?
thanks peoples!

Fair do's. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Using a Q-tec supply is about as desperate as it gets. I'd personally never risk my components with a cheap PSU. My brother did it and it fried his MOBO and memory. Still, you did what you had to do.
I use an enermax 480W PSU. It may have cost 80 quid as opposed to a Q-tec 550Ws' 25 quid, but I feel far more secure using it. :D

ok, well i'll get a better psu then, problem solved.
thanks a lot!!
> yeah, it's totally a Q-tec.
Oh dear, thats BAD dude, if you love that machine you will never put the 2 together again.EVER. I had a 500W Q-Tec, that was so bad that whenever the CPU went from idling to 100%, the fans would momentarily slow down and speed up again. Nasty cheap piece of kit.

In a word yes.

Antec, Tagan, Jeantech ... My Antec 380W totally outperforms my old 500W Q-Tec, it must be running pretty much at full power the whole time, but it maintains a very steady supply. A lot of the forum frequenters can advise you on PSUs...

possibly...
the old pc has no drives or anything in at the moment, it's just a mobo and a gfx card so it's entirely plausible.
are they notorious for being cack?
any replacement suggestions?
although the connection thing may be it, my old pc didn't use that 4-pin square connector on the mobo, but mny current pc does.
i'm running the smaller PSU as a temp measure on my main machine but i don't want to push it too hard.
thanks for the help!
Possibly the fan started to die, leading to the power supply overheating and hence the issues.
