I got to this in a very indirect way; I was previewing screenshots and development of the upcoming PC game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow Of Chernobyl" Where the game designers actually visited the "Dead zone" in Chernobyl to get a feel of the desolate atmosphere and take some pictures.

Their trip is illustrated;

After reading the above, my curiosity took me to this well written and quite touching series:

Although some would despute the authenticity of the above. However the link below, I found very very eerie indeed that is amazing; a whole city intact, but witout a single soul. The Woman in the picture is the very same "Rimma" who guided the game makers in the first link. The picture has been stitched up to produce the panoramic effect, hence the appearance of Rimma twice.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the thought of all those poor soviet firemen being sent with hosepipes to put out a nuclear fire very disturbing indeed.
Apparently most of the helicopter pilots that flew the helicopters illustated in the vehicle graveyard are now dead due to receiving unsafe doses of radiation. Somewhere if you google it, there is also a clip showing manual workers handling concrete pieces from when the reactor first exploded,that had dangerously high levels of contamination, they were only allowed 40 seconds at a time, however most of these people are believed to be dead.

However, its funny that the wolves and boars in the area seem to be resilient to the radiation.

Hope you find some of the links interesting.

Very interesting stuff. I don't have time to read all 27 chapters of the kiddofspeed story, but managed to read up to chapter 5 of that and the Game dev diary.

Some of those pictues are incredibly eerie. I'd like to go there myself and experience it first-hand.

As for the game, the early screens already looked pretty much like what these photos show - it's on track to be a near-perfect recreation.

My pa went to Chernobyl as a guest of the Ukranian government about 2 years after the explosion. Apparently the safety aspect involved being told not to touch the concrete tomb for the reactor (he was allowed to get 5 metres away from it) and only be in the area for 20 minutes.

Astonishingly, he's still alive.
