I got to this in a very indirect way; I was previewing screenshots and development of the upcoming PC game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow Of Chernobyl" Where the game designers actually visited the "Dead zone" in Chernobyl to get a feel of the desolate atmosphere and take some pictures.

Their trip is illustrated;

After reading the above, my curiosity took me to this well written and quite touching series:

Although some would despute the authenticity of the above. However the link below, I found very very eerie indeed that is amazing; a whole city intact, but witout a single soul. The Woman in the picture is the very same "Rimma" who guided the game makers in the first link. The picture has been stitched up to produce the panoramic effect, hence the appearance of Rimma twice.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the thought of all those poor soviet firemen being sent with hosepipes to put out a nuclear fire very disturbing indeed.
Apparently most of the helicopter pilots that flew the helicopters illustated in the vehicle graveyard are now dead due to receiving unsafe doses of radiation. Somewhere if you google it, there is also a clip showing manual workers handling concrete pieces from when the reactor first exploded,that had dangerously high levels of contamination, they were only allowed 40 seconds at a time, however most of these people are believed to be dead.

However, its funny that the wolves and boars in the area seem to be resilient to the radiation.

Hope you find some of the links interesting.

Aha, "don't move after being shot, this will cause death by radiation poisoning, making the experience as realistic as possible"

The fact that the goverment just sent residents of the town into the area as cleaners was disturbing.

They just wore flimsy coats and masks and they had no idea what was happening/what they was going in to clean.

A disaster like that makes you think how irresponsible humans really are to one and other. When something like that happens it can affect so many people directly.

The fact they didnt tell the people of the town for several days is just inhumane! They left them exposed to radiation for no reason, disgraceful.

Few years ago I hooked up with a mate that had a few Russian lasses that were over from Belarus and around the Chernobyl area, who had came here to get some clean air. We all went for a night out and had good craic. The ladies were very friendly, in every sense of the word.

It looks like when you use the map creation doohick on Operation Flashpoint, equip yourself with an A10, and let loose on the empty countryside and buildings.

I remember posting this a year or so back, cheers for reviving the link, I was looking for that!

It's quite harrowing to see all of those pictures.
