Right, must be quick.

Just ordered a new S-ATA drive (200GB 7200.7 NCQ Barracuda) to expand upong the measly 40GB IDE I have now. It's got some pretty important files, plus an installation of Windows XP SP2.

Now, how should I set up the S-ATA, and are there different ways?

I want to keep my 40GB, btw.

It'd be rather screwed if striped.

Differenet channels = no need to worry.

Raptors are good, but Cheetahs or Jaguars or whatever they call the ridiciulous 15 frickingn thousand revs per min drive is are better. Abnd bigger.

You've lost me...

I am referring to one Raptor drive being considerably faster than any brand or size of 7200 IDE drive and if you have two Raptor drives in RAID 0 you are looking at crazy fast boot times. The Raptor drives were designed for striping which is why very few talk about owning only one Raptor drive.

Yusss...

Turns out my devlish hands had applied a little too much for when inserting it, and at the wrong angle - bending pack a pin on the CPU. Well, it's all good now.

Also, my old HDD was corrupt - rather randomly. But it works now, so no sweat!

I cant's say its ever crossed my mind to be honest. It seems like too much hassle for what would no doubt be only a small performance gain, especially if i had to reboot to play a spontaneous bit of Warcraft with WS.

It's cool - Seagate (www.seagate.com, genius) have their own "copier" which copies an EXACT version (I mean exact - registry, any options on Photoshop or games, saves... All of it!) to the new drive.

Which works great, by the way.

Wha?

Which faster;

A - 200GB SATA 7200.7 with NCQ
B - 200GB SATA 7200.7 with NCQ and 40GB IDE

Plus is the difference notible? I mean, for the moment the 40GB is untouched until I find out what problems / advantages it gives (other than the obvious extra 40GB of space), but ya know...

Thanks for all the replies by the way... My PC is so beautiful now [cries]...

Have you considered running two installs of Windows on two separate drives? I know someone who has one install for gaming, and another for everything else. It also means that the gaming install doesn't need a lot of services/programs running on startup and you can turn off all visual effects.

Ive thought about that, my solution is to use the raptor as a boot drive which will have windows and a few select programs on it, anything else i will stick on my trusty 120gb maxtor. If i can find one for the right price i will probably go for it.
