I've had this All-In-One device for a while now and it had been working fine. However, I went to print something and it throws up an error:

System Error

The document cannot be printed due to a system error.

Try printing again. If unsuccessful, restart Windows and try printing again.

---------------

So I tried printing again - nothing.
Tried restarting and printing again - nothing.
Tried uninstalling the device and allowing windows to detect then re-print - nothing.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling all software then reprinting - nothing.

The strange thing is, the printer monitor icon in the system tray shows the printer is "Ready" so that's working, and the scan facilities also work fine. The copying facility also works fine, so the problem must lie with the software.

I have had a look on the HP Support section and there is nothing related to this error message.

Please - any help? I need the printer working!

I suddenly started having the exact problem and have gone through all the steps mentioned here in this forum. I guess that is what you get with a $80 printer. I think I will try a Canon printer next.

Hello! FINALLY I found someone else with the same exact problem. Have you found the fix for it yet? WE have called HP and they are clueless and always say its an error from Windows but as you say it is definitely an HP issued error screen. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of. They even sent me the 2.2.2 software on CD and said it would fix it. Well it didn't.

I uninstalled every USB Hub Driver on my system, rebooted and let Windows detect them.

I also tried using the original CD rather than the download version of the HP software. It comes with a nice little "HP Scrubber" program that removes every trace of driver/software from your PC.

So I uninstalled and ran the scrubber, rebooted and reinstalled....nothing!

It seems as though nothing will work! It's also stopped giving events in the Event Log now, I just get the error and that's all.

It's not a Windows styled error message though, it's being created by HP software. Has anyone got any ideas? The printer gets detected by the setup program, XP reocgnises it and installs all the drivers....so why won't it work?!?!

It's driving me insane now - I can't reformat cos I don't have all the disks with me at Uni, and I need my printer for during the coming term!

Oh yeah, and I reinstalled all my motherboard drivers from the CD as well.

Oooh err my port experiences are limited to the good old Parallel port :-(

Perhaps uninstall/re-install the USB hub driver through the device manager. I find when things go wrong in XP, just uninstall the suspected device, re-boot and let XP detect the uninstalled component when XP re-installs it seems to "sort out" most problems.

Otherwise faulty USB cable perhaps that only makes contact at certain angles (i.e when you tried it out on your mate's laptop)

Only COM and LPT ports are listed in Device Manager | Ports

I think it could well be something port related though, since the Event Log on Windows reports something to do with UP&P. On a more specific note, this is the message reported in the Event Log after each error message is shown:

I have tried it on different physical USB ports but that makes no difference.

The printer is attached via a USB cable. Do I still do these things?

Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Scroll down to "Ports" and uninstall or update the "Printer Port" sometimes the problem can be because more than one instance of the printer port appears, and you might have to uninstall or disable the offending one.

E.g I remember a laptop that used to show 2 Parallel Printer ports under the device manager when it only had one, if windows thought the printer was connected to the one that didn't exist then it didn't work, and often resulted in similar errors. A quick fiddle with windows and the BIOS sorted it though.

It might be called ECP?? Im sure there is buried deep in there somewhere, I'd be surprised if there wasn't...

Also go into BIOS and make sure it is the EPP bi-directional mode in operation...

Otherwise use the time honoured method of foot/fist to printer... as described by Paradox.
