Although it didn't bother me too much, as I was expecting it to be, so wasn't shocked or anything. Just take water around everywhere with you.
And remember you've got to have your legs + shoulders covered up when you're going into any cathedrals / chapels, of which there are lots. I got away with wearing 3/4-length trousers okay, but got told off for keeping my hat on.
Parents like all the history stuff, so around we went, and I actually quite enjoyed it.
Like I said, the ruins around the Collessium are much more impressive than the inside of the actual thing (which you have to pay to get into) and Herculaneum is much more impressive then Pompeii (both the same kind of thing - buried city, but Herculaneum is smaller, less crowded, and much more intact)

im into history quite boring i know but would love to see the Roman sites in Italy. this is getting harder.

Austria..
I want to go again. Maybe this time of year to - but the summer is crazy. Its gorgeous, its cheap you can get a coach there or cheap flight and when your there back pack to what they call 'gasthofs' (guest houses) They are very good value, Like bed and breakfast here but with the quality of most 4 star spanish hotels!
You have got the excellent train service.. I want to go there do what Im saying and buy those cheap week train passes.. Incredible value and you can see so much of the country and its cities.
