They both use a new Blue Laser, which has a smaller wavelength, meaning more data can be written/read.

HD-DVD is indeed a cheaper format though, for some reason.

HD-DVD is much cheaper than Blu-Ray, that I do know.

Obviously. Hence the article.

Something like that, but how could a normal DVD player cope with the "larger" HD-DVDs? You need a new player, although all this is a little pointless. They won't even be out here for a year or two yet and even then they'll be priced extremely high. You won't have to replace your movie collection yet.

Is that true? Blu-ray uses the new form of laser but i got the impression that HD-DVD used simple red waves and was just a larger DVD in essence.

Well you'll need to do that for both. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both the next gen for DVDs. Think VHS to DVD leap in quality, honestly, HD-DVD makes DVD look like pigshit.

HD-DVD will play normal DVDs, as I think Blu-Ray will too. But you'll need an HD-DVD player to play HD-DVDs and a Blu-Ray player to play Blu-Ray discs.

Sony lost the video war, and if its true that you'll need a new BluRay DVD player to play BluRays, it'll probably go the same way as the MiniDisc and Betamax.

Does HD-DVD work on normal DVD players?
If so, it'll win for sure - seeing as, from what I've heard, you'll need to buy a special blu-lasered DVD player to get Blu-Ray discs to work. And I doubt anyone wants to do that, or buy their entire DVD collection again.
