And neither hate nor Love the box...
So If I appear to be having a dig at the machine... Its not intentional... honest!
There is a couple of things that confuse me...
People keep saying that the PS2 is an upgrade of the PS1 and not a 'new', 'next gen'machine it its own right...
Whats that all about then?
Is it that the basic architecture of the PS2 is the same as the PS1, just with newer spec chips?
Is it that the PS2 was designed from the basic PS1 design and not from scratch?
Given the basic structure of all consoles and computers are pretty much the same... How do you decide what is an upgrade and what is a new machine? What is it about the PS2 that isnt a new?
And... If Sonys machines are going to be based on the same Architecture, surely there will be readily apparent problems when 256bit machines are attempting to run on an system setup designed for a 32bit machine?
Also...
I think the problem with PS2 games isnt that they include a large selection of sequels... but that the games present nothing new to gaming.
When we moved on from SNES/Megadrives/etc... to PS1/N64/etc... we not only got hardware upgrade, but new styles of gameplay, 3D platformers, FPS, RTS, the type of games that wernt around on the previous machine types...
The PS2 doesnt seem to include any new gameing styles that people arnt already familiar with. There doesnt seem to be any companies taking chances with anything new...
Now, given that it takes a console a couple of years, and that since the PS2's biggest competition is probably the PS1, then theres really no need for anything new to be tried. But I think this is where the PS2's range of titles currently slips up?
When they do come along, I'll be truely impressed!
If anyone can provide something though, I'd expect it to be Nintendo.
We'll see.
The

Yes... but... people have been saying that sort of thing since the mid-eighties...
Theres plenty of scope for new ideas...
Besides, if TV can come up with new format shows, why cant cmputer games?
Whether it offers anything new to gaming and to gamers I don't know, I haven't played one.
