And neither hate nor Love the box...
So If I appear to be having a dig at the machine... Its not intentional... honest!
There is a couple of things that confuse me...
People keep saying that the PS2 is an upgrade of the PS1 and not a 'new', 'next gen'machine it its own right...
Whats that all about then?
Is it that the basic architecture of the PS2 is the same as the PS1, just with newer spec chips?
Is it that the PS2 was designed from the basic PS1 design and not from scratch?
Given the basic structure of all consoles and computers are pretty much the same... How do you decide what is an upgrade and what is a new machine? What is it about the PS2 that isnt a new?
And... If Sonys machines are going to be based on the same Architecture, surely there will be readily apparent problems when 256bit machines are attempting to run on an system setup designed for a 32bit machine?
Also...
I think the problem with PS2 games isnt that they include a large selection of sequels... but that the games present nothing new to gaming.
When we moved on from SNES/Megadrives/etc... to PS1/N64/etc... we not only got hardware upgrade, but new styles of gameplay, 3D platformers, FPS, RTS, the type of games that wernt around on the previous machine types...
The PS2 doesnt seem to include any new gameing styles that people arnt already familiar with. There doesnt seem to be any companies taking chances with anything new...
Now, given that it takes a console a couple of years, and that since the PS2's biggest competition is probably the PS1, then theres really no need for anything new to be tried. But I think this is where the PS2's range of titles currently slips up?
I mean, look at the PSX. Compare Ridge Racer to GT2. In a few years time we could all be laughing at the graphics of GT2 or ZOE.
If only developers could make games with great gameplay and great graphics. I mean, why do you think MGS and ZOE are my 2 favourite games ever??
Thanks for reading, Ant.
PS- Shadow Of Memories appears to struggle graphically, as the backgrounds always seem to 'move' unappropriately, especially in FMV sequences.
Games like ZOE and MGS2 don't have that problem.
*Somehow manages to maintain an innocent expression.....
BAAAAH!
Meka! Have I taught you anything?
Take a seat, and listen to my ramblings.
My dream is this. One day, games/console developers are going to sit down, and actually think about games for a change.
"I know this seems a bit odd... but surely it's not the graphics we should be showing off?" One brave person will say...
Of course, this person will be laughed out of the room. Then, a few years later, someone else will say it, people will agree, and the first man will get really annoyed because he was the one that came up with the idea in the first place.
What? Where was I?
Oh yeah.
Ok. So graphics aren't important any more. We've finally reached the point where things can't look any more 3d, and finally, game/console developers will sit down, and take on the effort of making the game, instead of worrying about how the advert will look, or how people will react to the screenshots.
Then what?
Old school gaming, of course. We go back to our roots. Gameplay comes first. Plotlines. Lastability. All the things that seem to be missing from most of todays games. Making the game FUN, instead of making it look beautiful, only to be outdated in a few months.
Playtesters won't be looking for missing polygons in the characters when they turn... they'll be looking out for the gameplay aspects.
"I'm afraid that bit when you fire your guns at the terrorists, and then take over the bus and save all the children..."
"What about it?"
"It just wasn't FUN. Who wants to buy a game that isn't fun?"
Upsettingly, this is going to take a very long time to happen...
But then, there is a good side to the story.
Remember us all arguing about the PS2's graphics, and the main defense would be:
"It's going to take a while to reach it's potential..."
Ok, let's say now that the X-Box or Gamecube has already reached it's potential, BEFORE it's even released.
Without a doubt, this will upset a lot of people... but it makes me extremely happy. At last, graphics aren't a worry. Gameplay can be concentrated on.
Who cares if other consoles look better? I have my console, it may have reached it's potential in graphics, but it allows only for more creative games...
And don't even get me started on FMV. I could easily fill another six pages on that. ;0)

Is it 199.99? ... I heard they were going to drop it to 250?
