If i buy a network hardrive, that plugs into my router, which connects to the net.
Would i be able to use that as webspace? Ie. load webpages from it and stuff.

And would i be able to assign people webspace off it?

Any body got any ideas?

Surely if someone can connect to the FTP with the correct username and password, then it's possible to put a domain name to connect to the IP?

You'd have thought that having an FTP server built in would be a fairly big selling point! I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned on the retailer site.

Ah well, that solves all your problems then - setup the FTP and your mate can connect to it as though it were any other FTP server.

You can find all the answers to your questions here:

Infinitely preferable to listening to people who quite obviously have no clue about the product (which makes you wonder why they're answering in the first place :P).

In short, it has a built in FTP server. In theory if you set up your router to forward port 21 to the HD's ip address then people from outside of the local network should have access. But its only a theory, the manual doesn't cover it one way or another, its possible (but unlikely) it disallows outside access as a security measure.

If you were able to setup a VPN (Virtual Private Network) then yes. Or if you were running some kind of server on another PC, then he could access the Network Drive via the server.

Effectively yes - your webspace is limited by the capcity of your harddrive, and the bandwidth provided by your ISP.

Check out DynDNS if your IP address is dynamic.

If your IP address is static, you can just change the DNS tag (A tag I believe) to point to your IP address and you can use your web server with any domain. I had a few domains hosted on my PC at home, but I can't do that from Uni.

Hmm.. A cunning plan.

Only problem - does that mean I own my own "Webspace" ?

It depends what type of server you want? File server, print server, web server, ftp server, video-streaming server - pretty much anything you can imagine.

For web hosting, your best bet is running Apache on a PC turned on all the time.

A server is just a computer or piece of equipment used to provide a particular service to other computers or pieces of equipment attached to it by a network.

It could be a regular bog standard PC - you can download free server software from most shareware sites for use on Local Area Networks. Never tried setting up a server that is accessible via the internet though, although I expect the configuration to be similar.

Starting your own porn site then?

Umm, it wouldn't act as a server, no.

It would be like adding however much it is (space) to your PC's HDD. It's a simple as that. However, it would only be accesable through your network connection, so buy another S-ATA HDD instead. Cheaper and better.

Also - how build a server? Are they just spare PC's? Help...
