It would be quite a bit faster, though you would probably need a new motherboard and new ram at the same time depending on how old it is.

Barely.
In fact, the difference in performance for HL2 is a mere 3-5% increase, as in Doom 3. The fact I get very, very good FPS ratings in the both of them stands testement for itself...
Oh, and the improvement from RAM is huge, while you're GPU is only slightly better than mine.
Also, one of two things happening within the next few months, an 9800 Pro or a new motherboard coupled with an X800...
