Christmas is also a nice time to spend with close family and friends. Not to watch the BIG MOVIES on TV (i.e, anything they can get, regardless of theme. I.e Titanic on Christmas Day........ hmmm?).
Etc.
In old Spain (probably not in the big cities, who often follow US and UK ways) the custom is to give children gifts during the 'Three Kings' (nothing to do with George Clooney) or 'Epiphany' which is Jan 6th. This is the traditional time to give gifts as it represents the Three Kings (or wise men) giving the gifts to baby Jesus.
Christmas Day is for family, no Sound of Music or big movies on TV. It's a day for going to Church, then all the family gather round and have a meal before they all head out to a bar for the evening (even the children) and maybe a nightclub for the teens until around 6 or 7am.
New Years in Spain is sooooo much bigger than here. Their fireworks put anything London has to offer to shame. In that respect it's nearer to Scotland.
Basically, very different to here and great fun.
...cant find a parking space in the city centre.. being shoved and pushed all over the place while loonies run round doing their christmas shopping!

No all the christmas stuff started happening (lots of toy adverts on TV, shops selling christmas stuff, etc.) a two or three weeks before Halloween.

You celebrate halloween a bit late.
