Recently inspired by how easy and cheap it is to shop online from the States and an article in a PC mag, I've decided that it's too tempting just to get a new PC, with XP for my iTunes and A faster processor for my games. However, many queries arose after just a few minutes of investigation.

1) Win XP Pro

against

Win XP Home

What's the difference? I only skimmed over the specs of a couple of comps, but XP Pro seems to merit another 20 or so dollars. What makes it more pricey and would XP Home be perfectly good for my needs (see top of page)?

2) There's a manufacturer called Acer. Never heard of them myself, but do you guys know anything useful; reliability, etc. My current comp is an Evesham, although I would have prefered a Dell, and found out a treasure chest of problems. Like ME's inefficiency with system resources and how Eveshams over heat...

3) Anyone know the HMCE site better than me and can direct me to the import tax for computers or electricals in general.

Any help would be great!

:)

For your needs, there's no reason at all to get XP Pro.

Get the Home edition.

How much you thinking of spending?

You can always build a better computer for the same price, or even for less.

General equation -
Bought : Built
£1000 : £500-600

And given the ease of building your own, I see no reason not too.

Not only that, but most bought PCs are scimpy on parts. They'll have the piece of hardware that does only just enough for what they're advertising.

Recently I broke open my DELL and built a new one, using the RAM and CPU to kick start it. The DELL was only a year old, and yet the motherboard was missing an AGP slot, commenplace for years, meaning no graphics.

You'll probably already know this, but just to say...

Also there is very little difference between Pro and Home, and nothing to do with multimedia or gaming can be enhanced with Pro. Or at least nothing worth £20.

I've got Pro, I don't know what it does though.

The blue welcome screen is the best bit as far as I'm concerned...

I do, and this idea was already part of the options I was considering. I've bunged in plenty of RAM and a new graphics card in my current comp, and that was all going into a new comp, allowing me to look at cheaper PCs.

Also I heard there are many problems with building a computer (from a relatively old base; which it would need to be in order to make a profit)?

You can build a great athlon 64 rig if you go socket 754 at the moment. A competitor website has a very nice motherboard on special offer until thursday if you are interested.

What I see:
I know lots of jargon and find it funny baffling people.

Slip the card under the table. I'm sure you won't get banned*.
