I don't really watch a great deal of TV, but if I happen to just leave the old TV on, and watch it on any given evening, what I see displeases me.

Soaps. I'm sure on any given evening you could watch over 2 hours of soaps what with Neighbours, CrossRoads, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Brookside and Hollyoaks to choose from, and no doubt a few more I've missed.

What exactly is my problem with soaps then? Well it may be something to do with the fact that a large percentage of the country care more about what goes on in a fictional area, than they do about their local community.

They care more about the rape of Toyah Battersby more than they do some girl that was beaten just down the road. They'd rather find out who shot Phil Mitchel, than who broke into a neighbours house. Surely this is not right?

What's worse with soaps is that the simply continue to recycle the same old storylines with different characters. Neighbours is the worst culprit of these, even goig as far as using the same props and clothing for a character in the same predicament years later.

Soaps also show a severe lack of moral fibre! Just how many couples stay together in soaps? Almost every family is split up in some way. No wonder there are so many divorces in the country, if Kevin and Sally can split up, so can anyone. If Frank can have an affair with Pat, why shouldn't you? The only couple I can think off that have stayed together in any soap would have to be Jack and Vera in Coronation Street, and they're a comedy couple really, aren't they?

The only soap I ever watch with any regularity (about once a week) is Hollyoaks! Why is this? Probably because it's so unrealistic! The majority of the characters are attractive, and the storylines don't even attempt to stay on the lines of realism like the more serious soaps do.

Still, I'm bored of that now after watching it for a while.

Any soap fans out there willing to defend them?

So you find TV "retarded"? "offenssive"? how narrow minded are you? dont you have any adaptation to anything? or do you feel you have to rebel simply due to the fact that alot of people enjoy T.V. you have no logical argument against TV in general.
you generalisations are awful amusing, as are most generalisations these days.
Seeing as you object so much to T.V then i presume you won't be watching 'Raging Bull', possibly on of the greatest films ever made, which is on tonight, beacuse it is "mind sapping".
If you object to the idea of watching other people live their lives, then why do you watch films? are they not, unless i am strangely mistaken about people living their lives;

Mean Streets? yes i think you may find thats about 4 young mens lives... excessivley boring

Taxi Driver? oh yes how boring, one man living his live, how "mind sapping", i'd much rather move metal object around a wooden bord and trading little pieces of paper money...

So you see, like you, your point has no backbone. Thus deeming it worthless and with point.

But then again, if the extent of you mind is moving objects round and round and round a cardboard square on a table every night, then i'm sure the voyerestic "masses" which you talk about would be pleased to watch you...

It might be a radical view, but it's mine.
I havent at any point said that everyone should stop watching them.
Merely that I find them to be offensive.
Just me, I cant and wont speak for the nation, only myself.

But yes, I see homes aglow at night with the comforting radiance of "Who wants to watch someone else try win money?" and I get scared.

Commercials, beamed into your home 24/7.
Lovely.
Tv invents language that is oxymoronic
"Fresh Frozen"
"Virtually Spotless"
"Light, yet filling"

I dont like tv, so I don't watch it.
That's my choice, only mine and I speak for nobody else.

Channels and channels of celebrity chefs, tv detectives, game shows and soap operas.
An age where people are told what to do by shows, guides on places to go on holiday, the things to eat, programmes about programmes (Points of View), and most people that are celebrities shouldn't be allowed to own a tv, let alone be on one.

It's all a matter of taste I guess. You're happy to play monopoly, and others would rather watch people win money and be entertained without having to interact.

The people that believe that the characters are real people, and shout their names in the street. Well I'm sure most of them do have a grip on reality, it's probably because they don't happen to know the actors name.

If you saw Elton John walking along, and felt the need to throw yourself at him (for whatever reason) and shout his name, you'd be unliely to shout: "REG!"

And Elton John is very much a character created for our enjoyment. Same with Alice Cooper - his on stage persona is utterly different from the real him. I don't even know his real name come to think of it!

The Prime Minister mentioning that stuff - I had no idea he did that. Just shows you how derranged the british political system is.

But whatever your opinion and stance on TV, it's just a matter of choice.

Oh and that bit about eating takeaways - are you suggesting that watching television automatically equals lethargy and an unhealthy diet? Bit of a radical view.

I certainly dont blame soap operas for anything.
I dont watch them because I find them retarded.

I used to watch tv, but realised that it offered nothing for me.
That's just me though, I'm not imposing my rules on anyone else.
I have not found my life to lack in any way whatsoever since I stopped watching it.

My problems with soaps are that they dictate behavioural response in the mass-mindset.
There was a thing with Coronation Street where one character was sent to prison unfairly.
It ended up with a debate in Parliment and a comment from the Prime Minister.

Hello? What the hell is a Prime Minister talking about soap operas for?
And you hear all the time about the actors that are called by their characters names in the streets, or get abuse for the way their character is acting.

????
How is this right?
Why do some people have such a tenous grip on reality that they cant understand the notion of fiction and actors?

Tv just seems to waste people's times.
You can see the entire nation sitting in silence, watching television and talking about television as they shovel down fast-food and set the video for when they're out.
And this disturbs me.

Game shows.
Why watch other people win stuff?
Reality shows? Soap Operas?
Pointless, utterly pointless to me.
I just don't get it.

When I'm at home, I sit with my girlfriend and we listen to music, talk, discuss, play board games, go out for meals...we do everything but sit and stare at the cathode ray wet-nurse and talk about "Dirty Den" next morning at work.

Are you suggesting that an affair or a divorce on a television soap will influence people to go out and do the same thing? Thats ridiculous!

I take it you're from the same school of thought that says people who watch violent films and tv shows instantly become more likely to go out and be violent themselves.

Another clear example of how extreme tv and film censorship groups have their influence through proposterous statistical claims, circulated by a media base intent on constraining our very ability to decide on standards for ourselves.

As for neighbours being crap, well yes but then again it's only a light hearted show. We aren't expected to take it seriously. I don't think anyway, otherwise those Australians really are stupid.

I do like Eastenders, and I do like Hollyoaks. But not because what happens in them is believable and true to life, but because it's good entertainment. I know of millions of others that would agree with me.

Lots of people believe that TV is a very bad thing, because it closes off our minds etc. And yes there are real issues and real lives to be living. But peoples houses will not stop getting broken into if soap operas get taken off of TV. And muggings, no matter how unbelievably evil and nasty, will not go away.

And anyway, most people out of the way of such events (not the case for police, fire, ambulances, even journalists) seem to have detached themselves from caring. Its human nature to distance oneself, and in that way alleviate any negative feeling - sorrow, guilt.

All quite deep and thought provoking. But none the less, lets not blame BIANCAAAAAAAA because someone stole our car.

Yes they all, without exception, blow.

I dont watch tv, it numbs me to life.
Soap Operas - Are people's lives that boring that they need to watch pretend lives?

I have my own soap-opera, it's called life.
