I don't really watch a great deal of TV, but if I happen to just leave the old TV on, and watch it on any given evening, what I see displeases me.

Soaps. I'm sure on any given evening you could watch over 2 hours of soaps what with Neighbours, CrossRoads, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Brookside and Hollyoaks to choose from, and no doubt a few more I've missed.

What exactly is my problem with soaps then? Well it may be something to do with the fact that a large percentage of the country care more about what goes on in a fictional area, than they do about their local community.

They care more about the rape of Toyah Battersby more than they do some girl that was beaten just down the road. They'd rather find out who shot Phil Mitchel, than who broke into a neighbours house. Surely this is not right?

What's worse with soaps is that the simply continue to recycle the same old storylines with different characters. Neighbours is the worst culprit of these, even goig as far as using the same props and clothing for a character in the same predicament years later.

Soaps also show a severe lack of moral fibre! Just how many couples stay together in soaps? Almost every family is split up in some way. No wonder there are so many divorces in the country, if Kevin and Sally can split up, so can anyone. If Frank can have an affair with Pat, why shouldn't you? The only couple I can think off that have stayed together in any soap would have to be Jack and Vera in Coronation Street, and they're a comedy couple really, aren't they?

The only soap I ever watch with any regularity (about once a week) is Hollyoaks! Why is this? Probably because it's so unrealistic! The majority of the characters are attractive, and the storylines don't even attempt to stay on the lines of realism like the more serious soaps do.

Still, I'm bored of that now after watching it for a while.

Any soap fans out there willing to defend them?

I now know how you cope with no tv. Evening after evening of group orgying.

Interesting compromise.....

See, now that's something we can both agree on and do an "in-depth" probing.

Sorry, I couldnt resist that

Futurama.

Nope. Well, a couple of episodes but I've missed the rest so I think I've missed the backstory.

There was no patronising undertones, I'm damn proud of my achievments, as you are yours.
I wasnt being sarcastic with not having the Chronicle high on my list.
I don't get it where I live and dont bother to read the locals for my area, so locals for out of county dont make it to me.

You do your thing and best of luck,I do my thing and best of luck.
But, to keep this to merely personal opinion on the original subject:

I find Soap Operas to be boring and uninvolving, but I know I'm in the minority there.
Tv, as a whole, I find to be boring and offensive.
I used to watch nature documentaries and the news, but not any more.
Take it or leave it, that simple.
I choose to leave it.

Interesting list of things you're engaging with - although I hope I didn't detect a slight patronising undertone.

Yes journo's should be on the fence, but thats just the crap they tell us when we're training.

Anyone with a slight bit of linguistic knowledge can see the clear prejudices existing in the press.

And as for the Chronicle not being high on your list - well I guess you must have walked straight into the editors position at the Guardian. Oh no, you didn't.

Everyone must start somewhere.

Oh and please never call me dude - we are not americans.

As for the friendly discussion you were having - not exactly the way you described it. And I did not wade in with insults. I may have criticised your opinions, but that is not a personal attack.

Maybe I'll see you some time on our travels through the mystical world of showbiz and alcohol. I take it you'll be the one with bell bottoms and the flock of seaguls haircut?

I'm going to draw a line under this journalism thing now.

Television itself cannot bore you - the simpsons and films are both a part of tv. What you mean is that the crap quiz shows, the gardening programes, and whatever else bore you. Fair enough, but you must admit that there are some benefits to the device.

If it's only for the Simpsons. What do you think of futurama? I love that one too.

By the way, have you been to www.whitedot.org ?

They agree with you!

Sorry mate, Essex Chronicle isnt too high on my list.

Some of my bits?

Ghost writing a bio on Bill Hicks, should be available in a few months, granted that doesnt help.

Bylines in Punch Magazine, Empire, a couple of locals that keep me in fag money.

I'm not weary or underpaid, far from it.
Currently have a script under option with Artisan, looking to shoot in August and some other stuff.

But again, why does anyone care what I say or do?
I post what I want about what I want.
Sub-Editing is ok if that's your thing.

I write a few pieces a week for a bit of money, do it because I enjoy it.
Well read and I dont avoid gameshows for gamma-rays.

I avoid gameshows because they bore me.
TV bores me.
I dont care if you like it or not, doesnt matter to me.

You dont need to defend yourself dude, relax and enjoy your chosen life.
I dont care what you do, not through ill-feeling but because I genuinely am busy with my own things.

Armatige is a good person, a spot of friendly arguing.
Didnt involve you, but like you said, it's a forum for all.

just dont wade in and start with personal attacks.
Especially from a journalist, you're supposed to be on the fence.

Slinging mud at people is for kids, either offer something of your own instead of commenting on others if you feel strongly enough about it.

All of my points have been personal beliefs, it doesn't matter whether you agree or not.
But to start jumping up and down and being hostile negates any validity you may have had with me.

But you don't care, and that's right.
Just let it go...relax...it doesnt matter....

*removing gumshield"

I've never seen Brookie - is that the one set in Liverpool?

Couldn't abide that - the accent and all.

"shout into your face - a trait not uncommon with a lot of other journalists."

Just in case you have trouble correctly quoting me again.

Twisting the argument your way - a clear hack

One of the most insightful and imaginitive responses there:

Blach blah blah

Who was talking to me?! This is a discussion forum - by the very nature of it you may comment and expect intelligent resonses. Not some child-like muttering under the breath of a very weary and under-paid journalist.

Actually, books my little fella are of great imortance to me too.

"Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps" - bloody funny and insightful

Oh and I'm in the middle of "Fast food nation"

All current, not at all acts of self propultion.

I started off my career with a degree in journalism, I've worked for a couple of locals - The Essex Chronicle being one. Which sells more than any other in the country.

And I'm currently writing a piece on pub closing restrictions for spiked online, as well as bringing down a tv channel for some illegal goings on - which I will be pitching to the nationals.

Sub-editing is where I see myself going now though - A guy I know from the backline in the mirror sports section is very willing to take on my services.

As for reading some of my stuff, well you can buy the Chronicle, or you could wait for the spiked article.

Just gotta move up the ladder a bit more till my writing is more available.

How bout you?
