If anything the money should go to the parents rather than the child.
You go to school, you get money, I go to school, I get naff all (except an education).

It's an incentive for poorer family members to go into Higher Education instead of getting a dead end job like the rest of them.
I've applied for it, I'm in Year 13 so I won't get it for long.
Basically, if your parents earn more then £30k a year, they are wealthy enough to be able to buy you stuff, pure and simple.
It basically takes the strain of purchasing stuff using your parents money.
But consider that although my parents have money, it doesn't mean they give me money.
"Can I get money dad?"
"No, get a job"
Simple.
