I'm unsure what the franchise's main roots were, but after watching the special features on the DVD box set, it evidently manifested itself into something aimed at all ages, including adults.

Except Star Wars was originally planned as a weekly drama for children, like Animals of Farthing Wood.
The Bond Films still have a lot of people worked up over the amount of violence in films that generally have a PG rating.
Alongside James Bond films, the Indiana Jones movies were some of my favourite as a young child.
*Shrugs*
Edit: Although come to think of it I have the Transformers movie. Which is still more adult and mature than star wars.

Ahahhahahhahahahhahahaha.
They're still aimed at children.
Thankfully Indiana Jones wasn't really but then again the merchandise wasn't kicked into overdrive so we were spared that particular tragedy.
Wouldn't mind seeing the Star Wars story told with more flair and a darker approach though. Wouldn't shift as many dolls though I suppose.
You may not like them, but calling them films for children seriously weakens your argument.
