You know the ones - you hear it and everything else stops, fades away until there's just that song playing directly into you and reminding you of something you can't quite place.

Last time that happened was the start of the year, "Don't Speak in English" by Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez.
And it's happened again, last song a CD done for me.

"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley.
Just Buckley and his guitar, plain and simple. An incredible voice, makes Thom Yorke seem like the gimpy student-wannabe he is.
A soaring, soulful voice with a beautiful, sensual cover of a Leonard Cohen song.
Check it out if you've never heard it.

"Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"

Heh. Nah, she'd just been treated to me in full-blown ranting mode. After the echoes had died away and the stunned silence was taking hold, she remarked that "y'know, you really put me in mind of Brian Blessed; you've both got personalities that fill up the room."

Which was, admittedly, shameless flattery. But it worked for me.

Anyway, in an ideal world I'd be able to listen to Jeff Buckley's music whilst rolling around with the naked and honey-smeared Girls Aloud.

You all, in fact, sniff balls.

I discuss Jeff Buckley and you bring up Girls Aloud? What kind of pantywaist girlymen are you?
Don't answer Light, your credentials are already currently under scrutiny at the Man HQ...

Girls Aloud irritate me.
by rights i should absolutely loathe them, and yet try as i might, i have admit that so far they've had a few little moments (catchy choruses/bridges/etc) that i thought were really cool. all they need now is a whole song that i can listen to without wanting to cut myself and they're golden! :)

You ballsniffer.

But yeah, Hallelujah on a CD when you're not expecting it is a pleasure everybody should experience.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to buy the new Tom Waits one.

Can't disagree with you there; a mate of mine put it on a compilation tape for me a couple of years ago, and it blew me away. It puts pretty much every one of the bedwetting bands (Keane et al) to shame. I've never heard a song with such an aching sense of loss and bittersweet melancholy. Nor have I heard one that makes me willingly write such a pretentious sentence.

Of course, you have to bear in mind that I quite like that new Girls Aloud song, so...
