So Gamecube needs online play; Nintendo could make more money. Being able to play DVD's would even help.

Might well have Perfect Dark on the Cube by now if Microsoft didn't come in don't know how bad or good that could of been now.
Infact, Mario Kart seems to have a similar sort of hook.
Then when they did their online launch, there would already be a back catalogue of games. Obviously the game to launch it would be some sort of Pokémon game that was packaged with the adaptor.
Or the next Timesplitters game.
Sorted. :-)
Not to mention the Conker sequel, but they're due in 2005.
Damn!

Nintendo stated that to make money off of Online gaming they'd have to charge people and some games would need monthly payments (a.k.a Phantasy Star)...
Children don't have that money and it is a major put off for other games (such as me). The price of online gaming is always coming down and Nintendo will hopefully launch a nearly free service, possibly they'll add a bit extra onto the console to get online gaming free.
The console launches beside the PS3 in 2006 so there is plenty of time.

Didn't Sega get it going fairly cheap on the DC?

I dunno but Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong and Majora's Mask required it and it was free with DK. So quite a few million i'd imagine.
Online gaming is popular for the 15+ age group.
Nintendo are popular to the 10 or under age group.
Nintendo have a small fan base.
LIVE sells but not that much, many online games take years to make the revenue back especially with the amount of maintenance it needs.
Nintendo will only go online when online gaming is cheap to do.
