I've spent the last 7 hours.. yers, 7, trying to sort out this frickin' brand new computer.
Arrived yesterday, nice & shiny and stuff. Beauty.
Ah, but what's the problem, you say?
Okee.
Stupidly enough, family were so eager to get on it while I was out. Nothing was installed on it - no Norton.. So they browsed the Internet with no frickin' protection!! Boy, I'm angry.
Anyhoo.
Now the thing is infected with a shed-load of viruses and spyware.. :(
The question is pretty simple, the answer probably is too..
When scanning with Norton Antivirus, it shows a different amount of viruses every single time. At first it was 6, then 11, then 7 and so on. Only problem is, is that I can't delete these viruses! It will only delete 1 or 2 at a time.
Some of the stuff that's coming up are:
sui.exe
delupdat.exe
istactivex.dll
winad[1].exe
winclt[1].exe
bloodhound.packed
spyware.iwantsearch
Adware.Keenval
dialer.target eek!!
..and plenty more. I never knew Adware could be a virus.. :) I need some explaining to.
So.. it obviously messed the computer up because it wouldn't let me download a few things earlier. Stuff like SpyBot Search & Destroy. It's probably a bad program but anything would've helped! It would also close the Internet Explorer on a lot of the 'spyware remover' websites. All other sites were fine! It's like it knew.. Even when I did download something decent, the install screen would only stay for a few seconds then close itself. It did it with everything I tried to install.
PestPatrol has been a real helper. But now that's started playing up..
So.. anybody care to help with the 'why can't I delete the viruses?'?
I'll love you forever.
Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!
It did come with some discs:
Microsoft Works
Nero
Product Recovery DVD
PowerDVD
Supervoice
VIA & SIS Installation Driver
But that was all. No worries, I'll borrow a copy later on today.
Thank you ;)
When you get the message like "Invalid System disk. Please insert disk and press any key to continue", take the floppy out then hit F8. It will go straight to the menu you want to choose Safe Mode.

As Phi11ip has said, a reformat is your best bet on this one I'm afraid. Most viruses these days include some sort of 'you won't delete me without a fight' fallback.
But you may find that you've been given a recovery CD in place, which is basically XP but which has been branded by the company you bought the PC from. Chances are the CD won't look like your normal Microsoft Windows one. Did you get any CD's at all?
If so, just pop it into your CD rom and restart your PC, it'll hopefully just kick in for a recovery and ask you if you want to format and partition the drive first. Once done, it'll install itself back on as it was before.
Only this time don't have an open connection to the Internet until you've got it all installed and ready to go. Make sure you get Norton going before anything else, both the firewall (if it came with one) and the anti-virus. Once installed, go online and use the Live Update to get the most recent, um, updates.
Once that's done, http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us and patch yourself up with the windows updates, if you've got the time, get Service Pack 2 as well.
Next up, get yourself ad-aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html) and Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/), again updating these once installed using the feature provided.
Then, the boring task of scanning your PC with the two above program and your Norton antivirus.
Hopefully, you'll find yourself clean after that.
And I'd recommend getting yourself Firefox 1.0PR (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) as your web browser in place of Internet Explorer.
Also, forget Norton, they're a bit rubbish - get AVG 7.0.
Thankee, phi11ip. Guess I'll wait 'til tomorrow. XP was already on it, but don't have the CD!
There was a report that an unpatched and unprotected PC will only have, on average, 20 minutes time connected to the Internet before being damaged beyond repair.
